Champagne School: 4 Things You Need To Know

Understanding these fundamental aspects of Champagne will enhance your appreciation of this iconic sparkling wine.

It's All About Location

Champagne hails from a charming region in France called, well, Champagne. This area's unique soil and climate give the wine its distinctive taste and fizz. So, if it's not from Champagne, it can't be called Champagne – it's the law!

The Magic of Bubbles

What makes Champagne bubbly and fun to drink is the "traditional method." It's like a little science experiment in each bottle. After the initial fermentation, they add some sugar and yeast, cork it, and let the magic happen. Those tiny bubbles? They're carbon dioxide, a natural byproduct from the process.

From Brut to Doux

Champagnes come in a range of sweetness levels. The lingo can be a bit confusing, but think of it this way: "Brut" means dry, "Sec" is sweeter, and "Doux" is pretty darn sweet. There's something for every palate, from the super crisp Brut to the dessert-like Doux.

Aging Gracefully

Some Champagnes age gracefully, becoming even more special over time. Non-vintage ones chill for at least 15 months, but vintage Champagnes, made from one exceptional year, mature for a minimum of three years. And if you're feeling fancy, there are Prestige or Luxury Champagnes that are aged even longer for a truly special experience.

Now, next time you pop a bottle of bubbly, you'll have a little more insight into what's inside your glass.
