Where?
The Isle of Islay – pronounced eye-la – is the southernmost island of the Inner Southern Hebrides of Scotland. The Isle of Jura, the Kintyre peninsula and Northern Ireland are Islay's neighbours.
What?
Whisky from Islay is notorious for its powerful, bold flavour. The natural resources of Islay – peat (peat is a landmass formed by the breakdown of plants, moss and grasses. It produces a heavy, sooty smoke when burnt), sea breezes and soft, peaty water – give the whisky here a set of distinctive and much-loved qualities such as smokiness, earthiness and a hint of saltiness.
